A series of Audio Walks in and around Utrecht:
My practice explores the topic of walking in its broadest sense, from the physical to psychological journeys that require movements or actions - much like walking itself. Through this research trajectory I have become more attuned to patterns of repetition, regularity and synchronicity. This is echoed in both written and acoustic elements in the form of journeys that are both uniquely personal and yet universal in their resonance.
Together, I tread the streets with my collaborators, whilst also exploring the hidden layers of memory in relation to locality. These conversational and sonic searching’s, recontour the geographic tissue of place, and how it is wrapped around recollections, often highlighting invisible structures, and systems that shape our being. Physical presence and ethereal in-betweens are shared by walking and talking together, by listening, looking and being present in place. Historical, local research, along with phone calls, transcript dialogue and the harvesting of locational sonic snapshots act as a poly-vocal archival form.
Using my artistic research to build on this archival knowledge, I reflect on rhythms, layers and interconnecting patterns of place. I use anecdotal storytelling and sonic compositions to mediate bodily, environmental, political, societal and temporal flows, exploring our proximity and relationality to the myriad of repetitive structures and systems that not only inhabit us but also the social spaces in which we move.
